Gotta Have That Funk
My friend Pam is in the process of putting together a project on home movies, so I lent her the archival family footage of “Uncle Jonny’s Birthday Surprise!”
Every year (while we were still cute) my parents sent my uncle (who fled to the Castro upon arriving at adulthood) video footage of the kids, the house, the garden, my sister playing the piano, etc. for his birthday. He would then send that same VHS back shortly thereafter, and a year later, we’d renew the process. Not exactly a ‘birthday surprise,’ but you never knew what you were gonna get with my dad behind the camera! Pam included clips from her own childhood and her sister-in-law’s family and let me just say: click here for NOSTALGIA!
Last week, after the birth of my beautiful second niece (yay!), my dad proclaimed: “I now have two granddaughters! And one grandcat, Frankie.” This is the same man who “went out on a limb thirty years ago and stayed there.” Thank god he stayed there.
